On Wednesday, October 29th, the AWIBA Network, in collaboration with Dr. Ebenezer Laryea, Project Director of FRESHPACT and lecturer at Aston University, UK, hosted an enlightening workshop at the University of Ghana’s Hilla Limann Hall. The session focused on the timely and impactful theme — Business Opportunities in Plastic Alternatives in Ghana.

Addressing the Plastic Challenge

Dr. Laryea opened the session by shedding light on the severe impact of plastic waste on Ghana’s environment and economy. His insights highlighted the urgent need for innovative, sustainable solutions as plastic pollution continues to threaten ecosystems, livelihoods, and public health.

Embracing Sustainable Alternatives

Throughout the workshop, Dr. Laryea introduced participants to various eco-friendly materials — including paper, coconut husks, banana stems, and seaweed — that can serve as viable alternatives to plastic. These biodegradable materials, he explained, offer exciting opportunities for entrepreneurship and innovation in the packaging and manufacturing sectors.

Empowering the Youth

A key message from the presentation was the call to action for young entrepreneurs to venture into the emerging plastic alternatives industry. Dr. Laryea emphasized that Ghana’s youth have the creativity and drive to lead in sustainable innovation, turning environmental challenges into profitable ventures that benefit both people and the planet.

Funding and Grant Opportunities

Participants also gained insights into grant opportunities available for startups and small businesses developing plastic alternatives. This segment provided valuable direction for aspiring entrepreneurs seeking funding and partnerships to grow their sustainable ventures.

An Inspiring Session

The workshop proved both educational and inspiring, leaving attendees motivated to explore new business models within the circular economy. Many participants expressed renewed enthusiasm for creating solutions that align with global sustainability goals.

Special Session with Awiba Lady of the Year

The event also featured an exclusive session with Gabriela Yeboah Afoakwah, AWIBA Lady of the Year, who engaged with Dr. Laryea in a thought-provoking dialogue on sustainability, leadership, and innovation.

Looking Ahead

The AWIBA Network remains committed to empowering women and youth entrepreneurs through continuous learning and collaboration. Future workshops with Dr. Laryea and other experts will continue to build capacity and inspire sustainable business practices across Ghana and beyond.

Together, we can turn challenges into opportunities — and lead the transformation toward a greener, more sustainable future.
